Lets Over Think This-Week 3

September 28, 2022

Well, three weeks into the fantasy football/NFL season, and what do we really know? Well, unfortunately, the answer seems to be not that much. Except to expect the unexpected. Who had the Colts upsetting the Chiefs this weekend? How about the Jaguars over the Chargers? Carolina over the Saints? Well, some of you may have predicted one of those games, but ALL of them? I'm calling your bluff. There were some big fantasy performances this past weekend, but there were a LOT of duds from some big name players, as well as injuries starting to mount up. As always, we're going to recap the slate of NFL games, discuss the biggest fantasy headlines/performances, and what you need to be doing in order to optimize your chances of winning this upcoming week. As always, LET'S OVERTHINK THIS.   Week 3 results:

Browns 29, Steelers 17

Browns top performer(s): The duo of Amari Cooper and Nick Chubb continues to impress so far in Cleveland. Kareem Hunt had a quiet game, but as long as Jacoby Brissett is in at QB, all of Chubb, Hunt, and Cooper are solid weekly plays. Not sure why you would be panicking about this offense right now, but just in case you might be, TAKE A BREATH. Kevin Stefanski clearly knows what he is doing with this offense until Deshaun Watson comes back from suspension.   Steelers top performer(s): Diontae Johnson continues to have a safe floor, regardless of who is playing QB. The Steelers offense continues to struggle however. If I am a Najee Harris owner, this is the week I might TAKE ACTION. See who will bite on a trade, or wait until Harris has a big game, and then sell high. Fantasy 101. I struggle to see Harris putting up monster stat lines this season.

Bears 23, Texans 20

Bears top performer(s): David Montgomery went down early with an injury, but Khalil Herbert stepped in and had a HUGE stat line of 157 yards rushing with 2 TDs. If you have Montgomery, I really hoped you locked up Herbert before this occurred. If not, time to MAKE A PLAN.   Texans top performer(s): Dameon Pierce had another effective day running for 80 yards with a TD. Remember when some were concerned about his playing time after Rex Burkhead got a chunk of the carries in week 1? Seems to be a thing of the past. Pierce owners, TAKE A BREATH. Should be a solid RB2 all year long.

Titans 24, Raiders 22

Titans top performer(s): The (semi?) return of King Henry! While he did not deliver the astronomical stat lines of years past we have grown accustomed to, he did rush for 85 yards and found the end zone. For this week, Henry owners can TAKE A BREATH. If he were on my team though, I'm MAKING A PLAN. I see this Titans offense being up and down for a majority of the season, and that includes Henry.   Raiders top performer(s): In a game that we all thought Davante Adams would feast, it was **checks notes** Mack Hollins?!? It sure was. Hollins had 158 yards and a TD, which is mind blowing. The Raiders drop to 0-3 on the season, and things do not seem to be going well. If you have Adams, I would TAKE A BREATH. If I own other Raiders (i.e. Jacobs, Carr, Waller) I would advise you to MAKE A PLAN. Time to see what is available in the trade market or waiver wire to improve your roster, especially if you were banking on QB1 production from Carr.

Colts 20, Chiefs 17

Colts top performer(s): Good to see Michael Pittman return from his quad injury and put up 8 catches for 72 yards. Through three weeks with this team, however, the story line is the lack of big time performances from fantasy football's breakout star last year, Jonathan Taylor. Now, TAKE A BREATH. He will still post RB1 numbers when it is all said and done, but he probably won't end up as THE RB1 (which continues the trend we have seen in recent years).   Chiefs top performer(s): Down game for the Chiefs all around. Juju Smith-Schuster had a solid game, as did Travis Kelce, who scored another TD and came close to a second. One game does not change my season long outlook on this offense. TAKE A BREATH. Tough task again this week going to Tampa Bay, but the Chiefs should get it going after Sunday night's game.

Dolphins 21, Bills 19

Dolphins top performer(s): Chase Edmonds had 2 TDs on the ground, and Jaylen Waddle had over 100 yards receiving. While Tua did not repeat his 6 TD performance, he exited briefly due to his back *cough cough* head injury. Seriously, I have a hard time buying that it was Tua's back that caused him to stumble and collapse on the field, but we'll know more when the investigation is concluded. The Dolphins offense will continue to be okay as long as everyone stays healthy. TAKE A BREATH.   Bills top performer(s): Josh Allen had another 400 yard day, and his top receiving threat was.....wait for it....Devin Singeltary. Just like we all predicted. 9 catches for over 70 yards and a score. As I stated in past weeks, I like Singletary this year. I thought the preseason hype on James Cook was a little premature. Singletary is looking like a steal for those that got him as a RB2/flex. Although it was a sub par performance from Diggs and Gabe Davis, let's TAKE A BREATH. This BIlls offense will be just fine.

Vikings 28, Lions 24

Vikings top performer(s): Dalvin Cook had over 90 yards rushing and a TD. The bad news? He lost a fumble and got hurt. What's even more concerning is that he has had previous injuries to the same shoulder. Apparently he is going to wear a harness and play through it, like he has before. But, if I am a Cook owner I think it's time to MAKE A PLAN. If you have Mattison, then that was great foreshadowing/planning on your part. If you don't, better exhaust all options to get him.   Lions top performer(s): Jamaal Williams had over 80 yards rushing with 2 TDs. However, this came at the expense of Swift getting hurt with a shoulder sprain that could cause him to miss a few weeks. As with any backfield, I hope you planned ahead and secured the handcuff here. If not, time to TAKE ACTION. Early reports indicate that Swift is going to miss 2 games. Need to replace that production.

Ravens 37, Patriots 26

Ravens top performer(s): Lamar Jackson is doing unreal things to start this season. Looks like a man on a mission to get the bag that he deserves. Mark Andrews had a couple of scores as well, and it was good to see JK Dobbins in his first game action since his preseason ACL & LCL surgery last year. All is well with the Ravens offense. TAKE A BREATH.   Patriots top performer(s): Devante Parker had a monster game, and Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson both scored on the ground. But, the bigger storyline is the injury to Mac Jones. High ankle sprain that looked pretty bad. Surgery is on the table, but he's going to miss a few weeks regardless. Big hit for the Pats offense as a whole, but if you have Stevenson or Harris TAKE A BREATH. Think this means they lean on the running game even more.

Bengals 27, Jets 12

Bengals top performer(s): Joe Burrow had a pretty clean game with 3 passing TDs and no INTs, and Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins had solid games as well. Jamar Chase scored, but ended up with 29 yards receiving. Joe Mixon was a little banged up, which is not ideal coming into a short week. With that being said, I'm still TAKING A BREATH with the Bengals offense. Their O-line needs to clean it up, and they have a tough test against Miami this week, but I'm still playing my Bengals weekly.   Jets top performer(s): Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson are two foundational pieces for the Jets offense. Think their production only improves once Zach Wilson is under center as well. Feels weird to say, but TAKE A BREATH. Brighter days ahead.

Eagles 24, Commanders 8

Eagles top performer(s): Jalen Hurts again. Three weeks into the season and he keeps putting up otherworldly stat lines. He did it this game without even rushing the ball effectively. The big beneficiary this week was Devonta Smith. The Slim Reaper had 150 yards receiving AT THE HALF. It may be AJ Brown one week, Dallas Goedert or Devonta Smith the next week, but the big performances are not going anywhere. TAKE A BREATH.   Commanders top performer(s): The offense was getting pummeled the entire first half. Gave up 6 sacks in the first half, 9 for the game, and most of their yardage came in garbage time. This is where Terry McLaurin got his points. However, if you're banking on production from this offense I would MAKE A PLAN. Tough test ahead vs Dallas' defense this week.

Panthers 22, Saints 14

Panthers top performer(s): The offense continues to look mediocre at best, and that might be too nice. CMC had over 100 yards rushing, but was unable to find pay dirt. Laviska Shenault had a long TD grab, but that was about it. If I hold any pieces on my fantasy roster, which I do (looking at you DJ Moore), it's time to MAKE A PLAN. I'm holding hope that Moore has a big game in the future and maybe sell high. Just do not drop him yet.   Saints top performer(s): Chris Olave. Monster game with close to 150 yards receiving on 9 catches. Seems to be the real deal and could have more opportunities in the future. If you read last week, however, I'm worried about this offense as a whole. Hard to be very effective as an offense when your QB is dealing with 4 fractures in his lower back. MAKE A PLAN.

Jaguars 38, Chargers 10

Jags top performer(s): James Robinson, Christian Kirk, and Zay Jones. Credit to Doug Pederson for injecting some life and creativity into this offense. As I mentioned last week, it's truly incredible to see JRob performing at this level post Achilles. Here we are going into week 4 of the NFL season and I'm telling you all to TAKE A BREATH. This offense should produce season long.   Chargers top performer(s): Knew this was going to be tough with Herbert playing through the fractured rib cartilage. The ground game got a whopping 26 yards total FOR THE GAME! Add in the Rashawn Slater season ending biceps injury, and I think it's time to MAKE A PLAN for you Austin Ekeler owners. I think he will be a fine option due to his receiving threat, but I have a hard time seeing his rushing really taking off anytime soon.

Rams 20, Cardinals 12

Rams top performer(s): Cam Akers looked solid averaging over 5 YPC and also found the end zone. This backfield may be maddening at times this year, but TAKE A BREATH. I can see Henderson and Akers continuing to be flex level options. Surprisingly quiet game for Cooper Kupp.   Cardinals top performer(s): Matt Prater. The only Cardinal who scored. But seriously, if I have to choose a position player, it's Hollywood Brown. 14 catches for 140 yards. Brown is feasting with Deandre Hopkins out. Brighter days ahead for this offense so let's TAKE A BREATH for now. Could change next week though.

Falcons 27, Seahawks 23

Falcons top performer(s):Cordarrelle Patterson! Over 100 yards rushing with a TD. Continues his trend as a legitimate RB from last year. Also, remember when I said to TAKE A BREATH in regard to Kyle Pitts? Well, he had 5 catches for 87 yards. Although he did not score, I'm imploring you, again, to TAKE A BREATH. It's coming.   Seahawks top performer(s): Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf had solid games for the receiving corps, and Metcalf finally found the end zone. Rashaad Penny looks good running the ball too, and it seems like it is his backfield for now as he holds off Kenneth Walker II. The offense may fluctuate as far as scoring points, but I'm playing my Seahawks players when they play a sub par defense. TAKE A BREATH.

Packers 14, Buccaneers 12

Packers top performer(s): Romeo Doubs, welcome to the Aaron Rodgers circle of trust. Seems like after a few weeks Doubs has earned the invitation. 8 catches 73 yards and a score, and Allen Lazard also scored. Seems like Rodgers is going to be okay with this new, younger receiving corps. TAKE A BREATH. With Aaron Rodgers at QB, I trust the youngins'.   Bucs top performer(s): Russell Gage had 12 catches and a TD. As Forrest Gump once said, "that's all I have to say about that." As far as Tom Brady and the rest of the offense, like I said last week, MAKE A PLAN. I'm not giving up on him just yet. Let's see how he does when Evans & Godwin come back.

Broncos 11, 49ers 10

Broncos top performer(s): Courtland Sutton seems to be the clear WR1 in Denver. The running game is up and down and it's maddening to see Javonte Williams run effectively just to see Melvin Gordon vulture some TDs. Russell Wilson just looks off though, so if I have Wilson I'm MAKING A PLAN to upgrade the QB position.   49ers top performer(s): Jeff WIlson Jr had over 100 yards total, Aiyuk found the end zone, and Deebo had a solid game. While the offense looked flat, they were facing a tough Denver defense in Denver. TAKE A BREATH. Think they will produce more as the season goes along. The chemistry with Jimmy G helps.

Cowboys 23, Giants 16

Cowboys top performer(s): Ceedee Lamb redeemed himself after that first half drop with a wild one handed TD grab for the win. The Cowboys also rushed for 170+ yards as Tony Pollard and Zeke were both effective. Although Pollard definitely seems to have more juice than Zeke at this point, the Cowboys will continue to split carries for the foreseeable future. The fact that all three are playable options with Cooper Rush is a surprising development.   Giants top performer(s): Saquon Barkley looks great. That first half TD run was vintage Barkley and he looks like he is going to put up RB1 numbers all season long. TAKE A BREATH with Barkley. All is well and let's hope he stays healthy. The bad? Sterling Shepard tore his left ACL after having a left Achilles tear last season. Brutal development for him, the Giants, and their receiving corps.   Some big matchups are in store for week 4. Will some fantasy disappointments bounce back? Looking at you Joe Mixon. How will some players such as Devonta Smith and Chris Olave build off their huge week 3? Let's see how it all shakes out. See you all next week!
