New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes left Thursday’s game in the fifth inning after he suffered a hamstring strain. Cespedes told reporters after the game that he “felt a shock,” when the injury occurred. Manager Terry Collins suggested that Cespedes could use a few days out of the lineup, according to CBS Sports.
“It sounds like a day-to-day issue, with two weeks being the maximum [amount of time he will miss],” the Fantasy Doctors Dr.Selene Parekh said. “He has got to give it time to heal or it will become a chronic issue throughout the entire season.
The injury to Cespedes adds to a long list of injuries the New York Mets are dealing with this April. Steven Matz, David Wright and Brandon Nimmo have each been out for weeks, with Nimmo being the closest to returning and both Lucas Duda and Travis D’Arnaud are beat up with minor injuries.
Cespedes began the season with a strong power surge, clubbing six home runs and having 10 RBI with a manageable .263 batting average. He was en route to get another invitation to the Home Run Derby, but may have to hold off on earning another crown if he is recovering from an injury. Manager Terry Collins will have to find a replacement and reconfigure the lineup
The injury should now allow Michael Conforto to receive regular at-bats in the starting lineup which was an issue in 2016. To Mets fans and fantasy owners-alike, the 24-year-old should now be owned in all 12-team leagues until Cespedes is healthy.
He has shown serious improvement early this season from the .220 batting average he dawned last season. Conforto is batting .320 with two home runs and six RBI in just 26 at-bats in 2017. However, the Mets have yet to trust him against left-handed pitching and Juan Lagares hit .260 against lefties in 2016 compared to Conforto’s .104 batting average. Expect Lagares could earn starts in both left field in addition to center.
Lagares is known far more for his glove than his bat. He has 17 home runs since making his Major League debut in 2013 and has hit above .260 in a season once since then. He is a far better defensive option than Conforto and could earn more starts if Conforto bats goes cold.
