Wesley Matthews of the Dallas Mavericks was forced to exit Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors due to a strained right calf injury. He refused to take questions following the game that pertained to the injury, in a sign of frustration.

According to the Fantasy Doctor’s Dr. Selene Parekh, calf strain injuries typically require players to miss anywhere from two to six weeks. That timetable has him returning on Mar, 27., at the earliest, and as late as Apr. 24.

Matthews regular season may be over. He could very well return in the early half of the timetable but even that is a stretch. His long term health and his team’s playoff positioning will be the biggest deciding factors in his return. The Mavericks are now 3.5 games behind the eight-seeded Nuggets, who have won three games in a row.

Matthews is a vital part of this team as a whole but particularly on the defensive side of the ball. He has habitually been tasked with guarding the opposing team’s best guard. They may find themselves falling out of playoff contention without their best perimeter defender to help them mask the worst offense in the Western Conference. If that is the case, Matthews is not likely to return this season.

Dallas will have difficulty finding a comparable defensive replacement within its current roster. Instead, they will look to score more by giving more minutes to Seth Curry at the shooting guard position. Curry typically comes off the bench as the team’s sixth man, even causing Carlisle to sit starting point guard Yogi Ferrell in his favor. But Curry may be asked to start at shooting guard in Matthews place. The defense may not be there, but the offense sure will.

Curry has been on fire since the start of the second half of the season. He is now averaging 18 points, three assists, three assists and has made 50 percent of his shots from beyond the three-point line. His defense may not be comparable to what Matthews offered at the shooting guard position but his three point shooting capability is even greater than Matthews this season. More reps for Curry will give fantasy owners a boost with many league’s playoffs beginning this week.
