Josh Donaldson has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a calf injury, Mike Wilner, the Blue Jays Radio play-by-play announcer, reported. It is an aggravation of the same injury that caused him to miss Tuesday’s home opener.

“Calf injuries and strains can persist throughout the entire season unless they are given enough time to heal. Given that he had a re-aggravation so [early] in the season it is concerning,” the Fantasy Doctor’s Dr. Selene Parekh said. “Look for him to be shut down and will require rest, anti-inflammatories and extensive rehabilitation. Expect him to be out four to six weeks or two to four weeks on the short end.”

Losing the 2015 MVP is a tough blow for a Blue Jays team that started the season 1-8. However, John Gibbons said he does not believe the injury is a lot worse than when he suffered the injury a few days ago. This is the type of injury which will display whether his health is more important than the team losing games, because they desperately need him in the lineup.

The injury tends to linger throughout the season if not properly treated, as Dr. Parekh stated. Toronto is likely to take it easy on its star player, whom they were hoping can have a big season to soften the blow that followed the loss of Edwin Encarnacion to free agency. Donaldson must be stashed in all fantasy leagues until he returns to full health.

Ryan Goins stepped in for Donaldson in the team’s home opener against the Brewers on Tuesday, batting ninth in the order. Goins is a career .223 hitter in 862 at-bats. He, like Darwin Barney, are utility infielders.

Barney is also a utility infielder who has made a career out of his versatility with his glove. However, he has just 25 career home runs since making his debut in 2010. He should see more at-bats in Donaldson’s absence. But fantasy owners shouldn’t flinch.

Donaldson normally bats second in the lineup and manager John Gibbons just moved everyone up in the lineup when Donaldson missed Tuesday’s game. This should allow for Jose Bautista, Kendrys Morales and Troy Tulowitzki to see more at-bats.
Toronto is already managing a loss of Encarnacion, the team’s biggest run producer in 2016. Losing Donaldson and having no immediate replacement could be devastating to the Blue Jays season in a competitive American League East. Toronto is already off to a slow start. An injury to a player like Donaldson could demoralize a clubhouse.
