UPDATE: Price does not require surgery, rest and medication only
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher David Price is currently experiencing elbow pain causing the Red Sox to have serious concern that Price is a candidate for Tommy John surgery, according to ESPN’s Jim Bowden. He will just miss his next scheduled start until he receives the result of an MRI Thursday morning.
“You always worry about UCL issues with elbow issues,” the Fantasy Doctor’s Dr. Selene Parekh said. Parekh believes the best case scenario is that Price has only suffered a strain and would only require rest, rehab and possible platelet rich plasma injections. However, fantasy owners should prepare for the possibility of Price requiring surgery, which would shelve the former Cy Young Award winner for the entire 2017 season.
If Price’s injury does require him to miss the 2017 season, the Boston Red Sox starting rotation will no longer be able to compare itself to the Cleveland Indians pitching staff. Chris Sale, whom the team signed in the offseason, will be able to make up for Price’s production in the rotation. Rick Porcello, last season’s American League Cy Young award winner, will follow in addition to knuckleballer Steven Wright and lefty Drew Pomeranz. They were already projected to be in the rotation and their production will not change with Price out.
But the injury does open up a spot at the end of the starting rotation. The Red Sox have a wealth of possibilities to replace Price and will have no problem finding an arm within the organization.
Eduardo Rodriguez will likely get the first opportunity to take hold the new vacancy in the rotation. He is 13-13 with a 4.41 earned run average in 41 career start. He also has 198 strikeouts in 228 innings pitched. A knee injury cut his 2016 season short and was ene aggravated in the offseason during winter ball. However, he has insured that his knee troubles are in the past. As the likely candidate to immediately replace Price, Rodriguez will could see a high win total with the support of Boston’s lineup behind him. He warrants serious consideration at the end of Fantasy draft boards in 12-team leagues.
Rodriguez will actually start in Price’s place on Saturday. However, if Rodriguez doesn’t work out, the team could decide to give veterans Roenis Elias or Joe Kelly a shot. They could also look to younger arms like Henry Owens or Brian Johnson. But they do not warrant fantasy consideration in any league as of now.
