UPDATE: Odorizzi was placed on the 10-Day DL

Jake Odorizzi left Saturday’s game against the the Red Sox due to a tight left hamstring, the Tampa Bay Rays announced via Twitter. He lasted just one inning before being replaced by Erasmo Ramirez.

“It sounds more like a tightness issue, so he should return in 1-2 weeks,” the Fantasy Doctor’s Dr.Selene Parekh said.  “He may miss his next start and will require rest, therapy and anti-inflammatories.”

It seems like Odorizzi could miss his next start. Ramirez coughed up a home run to Mitch Moreland initially, but settled down the rest of his time on the mound. The home run was the sole blemish in a strong four inning emergency relief appearance.

Ramirez is expected to make a start if Odorizzi is not ready to go the next time around. He was 11-6 with a 3.77 ERA in 27 starts with the Rays in 2016, making him an interesting spot start for desperate fantasy owners. However, Ramirez will likely be far from being the top option available on the wire in most fantasy leagues.

Chase Whitley also has a shot at earning a call-up to start in the event Odorizzi does miss his next start. He made one start in five appearances in 2016 with the Rays, posting a 2.51 ERA while striking out 15 batters in 14 innings. But there is no need for owners who are seeking starting pitching help to look in this direction.

If fantasy owners get out to a strong lead in their matchups next week then they should have no problem holding onto Odorizzi. However, he is a lower-end starting pitcher in 12-team fantasy leagues as long as he plays on a weak team in the American League East.

Odorizzi has a 4.50 ERA and eight strikeouts in his first two starts this season. However, he did post a 3.69 ERA with 166 strikeouts last season. Fantasy owners may not deem Odorizzi worthy of sitting on their roster for a missed start.
There are plenty of pitchers trending up on the waiver wire to entice owners to cut ties amidst the injury.
