Miami Heat will be without Goran Dragic on Monday. He is dealing with a sprained left ankle as the Suns take on the San Antonio Spurs. Monday will mark his second game missed after driving into the traffic of the defense during ball transition and appeared to step on a foot of a Chicago Bulls defender with just 4:55 seconds left in the third quarter. He never returned.
“I feel like I stepped on the guy’s foot and then just rolled my ankle,” Dragic said.
The point guard logged 22 minutes in the Heat’s 98-95 loss to Chicago and did not have his best day on the court. He finished with just nine points ( 3-of-9 shooting). Dragic did have two steals, and four assists, but also had four turnovers.
The Heat firmly believe that this is not too serious and the X-rays came back negative. Continue to consider Dragic day-to-day. “The X-ray is negative, so that’s a good sign,” Dragic said. “We’ll see how the ankle is going to be [Friday]. I twisted it, so it hurts right now. It’s just a precaution, that’s why I have a boot on.”
Dragic has averaged 31.5 minutes per game in seven games played. He is shooting 45.2 percent from the field (16.3 points), 41 assists (4.7), and 48.3 percent from beyond the arc. In his place are both Tyler Johnson and Josh Richardson.
On Saturday, Richardson got the start and played 32 minutes scoring 12 points and adding four assists with two steals and one turnover. He was horrible from the field only making 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) and 0-3 from the three point area.
As for Johnson he came off the bench and played 29 minutes. He scored five points but was only good on only two of seven shots (28.5), four assists, and missing both of his three-point attempts. Both players combined for 17 points (8-23 shooting), eight assists and 0-5 from beyond the arc. They did have a 3:1 turnover-to-steal ratio.
It’s still unclear how long Goran Dragic will be out, but the Miami Heat are going to keep him off his ankle for as long as possible. There are rumors that Dragic may be in for a solid trade piece for the Heat. The exchange would open up the playing time for either Tyler Johnson or Josh Richardson and perhaps both.
The latest rumor has a three-way deal with the Miami Heat, New York Knicks, and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs would obtain Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks would receive Goran Dragic and shooting guard Josh Richardson, while the Heat would come out of this trade proposal with Kevin Love.
The next game that Dragic could be available is Tuesday against the Atlanta Hawks or Thursday against the Milwaukee Bucks. Both games will be at home.
He is now out of the walking boot but still, will miss tonight’s game against San Antonio. Dragic mentioned today about being boot free.
“Today I took the boot off. Now I’m doing I’m exercises,” he said as he iced the ankle during Monday morning’s shootaround. “Today I did the bike for the first time. So it feels better.”
