Tyler Eifert has already been ruled out for Sunday’s contest against the New England Patriots — a matchup that the 2-3 Bengals and the “Red Rider BB Gun” really could have used the additional firepower (see what I did there?).
Cincinnati ranks 30th in the league in red-zone TD conversion rate (40%) — a far cry from 2015 when they ranked 6th in the NFL at 65%. While the loss of Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu in FA this offseason has contributed to the nosedive in efficiency, it’s hard to argue that the biggest missing factor has been the man aptly nicknamed “The Eifert Tower.”
While Eifert was set to return in week 5 following his recovery from offseason ankle surgery, he sustained a new injury last week that the Bengals are deeming a “minor back injury.”
That’s it. Minor.
Perhaps someone should enlighten Head Coach Marvin Lewis, because if a player still has been unable to practice a week after his initial return date, I’m not sure that “minor” is the most accurate way of putting it. But I digress….
As far as what’s really going on, one can only speculate. The Eifert Tower is closed for renovations and fantasy owners are growing frustrated.
For what it’s worth, Tyler Eifert was seen on the field doing rehab work during Friday’s practice. Fingers crossed that he’s able to put in at least some limited practice reps prior to week 7’s juicy matchup with the winless Browns.
