DBacks C Jeff Mathis out for the season with hand fracture-Dr. Morse

Diamondbacks C Jeff Mathis diagnosed with an avulsion fracture of his right hand. This will be a season ending injury. Depending on the location of the avulsion fracture, initially buddy taping is typically recommend it for about 3 to 6 weeks. If fracture is large and involving over 30% of articular surface then it should be referred for surgery involving open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Either way expect him that to have residual soreness in the PIP joint for several months and possible permanent enlargement of the joint as a result of the healing process.
